Description

Nitrofurantoin bnf

Nitrofurantoin (bnf) is used to treat or prevent certain urinary tract infections. This drug is an antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria. It is not effective for viral illnesses (e.g. common cold or flu). Unnecessary or excessive usage of any antibiotic can reduce its efficacy. Nitrofurantoin should not be used by children under one month old due to the risk of hemolytic anaemia.

How to use nitrofurantoin bnf

Take this medication with food or milk as prescribed by your doctor. This drug is typically given four times daily to treat infections or once daily before bedtime to prevent them. Swallow the medication whole. Avoid using antacids containing magnesium trisilicate while taking this medication. Magnesium trisilicate-containing antacids bind to nitrofurantoin, inhibiting full absorption.

Dosage and duration is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. For children, the dosage is also based on body weight.

For the best effect, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time(s) every day.

Take this infection-prevention medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not skip doses or stop taking it without your doctor’s permission. Notify your doctor if you get symptoms of a new urinary tract infection, such as pain while peeing.

If you are using this drug to treat an infection, you should continue to take it until the full prescription dosage is finished, even if your symptoms improve after a few days. Stopping the drug too early may cause the infection to recur.

Inform your doctor if your condition lasts or gets worse.
